Doppelhaus are proud to announce our collaboration with renowned retailer of natural, ecological fabrics, Lebenskleidung to produce a version of our Hessian Cloudwool® with organic, local German wool from the Elbe region of Northern Germany. Buy the material by the metre here and check out Lebenskleidung’s Autumn/Winter Lookbook for their interview with Doppelhaus founder Martin on pages 10-12.
This super-local version of Cloudwool is produced within a 200km radius of Berlin. Even though this might still sound like quite a long distance, this fabric requires 27 x less transport than a typical merino wool fabric. Most high quality merino wool materials are made from fleece shorn in Australia, shipped approximately 18,000km to Europe for spinning and weaving, and then transported further still to be made into garments that are shipped into stores worldwide.
This particular batch of Hessian Cloudwool® is made in Chemnitz, Saxony with wool from the company Elbwolle, who put an emphasis on supporting local farmers by paying them fair prices. From fibre to finished fabric, this material needs only just over 600km of transport.
This is the first production of Cloudwool® that Doppelhaus have made with German wool, but we greatly look forward to expanding our range of Cloudwool with local wool from places across Europe. All European farmers are struggling with low wool prices, and selling their wool to wholesalers is often not worth their while. Doppelhaus aim to raise the value of this wool by turning it into higher value fabrics suitable for fashion and interiors.
